On the afternoon of March 11, 2021, launching ceremony of Tsinghua University Tongzhou Base for Financial Development and Education Project (hereinafter referred to as the Tongzhou Base Project) was held onsite in Tongzhou District.

Chen Xu makes a speech

On behalf of Tsinghua University, Chen Xu Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee, extended her heartfelt thanks to all parties concerned for their trust and sincere support. With the caring from the public, Tsinghua University has been developing vigorously. In the new chapter of development, the Tongzhou Base Project marks a firm step to actively participate in the sub-center construction for the capital development. Moreover, it shows that the public is attaching great importance to the higher education.

She added, serving national policy and supporting the local development, the Tongzhou Base Project will utilize Tsinghua University’s technological innovation and education resources to further understand, implement, and contribute to the new development concept. Integrating PBC School of Finance and School of Continuing Education, Tongzhou Base will carry out fintech research with international vision and high standard. Tsinghua University will enhance its co-operations with top educational institutions worldwide to better serve the economic development. She is convinced that the Tongzhou Base will be a new strategic pillar for the Tsinghua University’s development.

Sui Zhenjiang makes a speech

Sui Zhenjiang, deputy mayor of Beijing Municipality, and secretary of the Party Working Committee and director of the Management Committee of Beijing Urban Sub-center, also made opening remarks. He addressed that the launch of the Tongzhou Base Project in the sub-center is of great significance. The planning and construction of the capital sub-center has made great achievements, where the urban framework has been fully established, and great changes have taken place in urban and rural areas. The sub-center will implement new development concept to attract more talents, and further contribute to national development. Tsinghua University is a century-old prestigious school with rich history, strong discipline competitiveness, and an extensive social influence. Through the cooperation between Tsinghua University and the sub-center, Tongzhou Base will become an important platform integrating competitiveness and innovation, supporting development of the region.

At the launching ceremony, leaders from Tsinghua University, Beijing Municipality, the Management Committee of Beijing Urban Sub-center, and Tongzhou District jointly pushed the operating lever to announce the launching of the Tongzhou Base Project, symbolizing an important step in the construction of the Tongzhou Base.

With an estimated total investment of RMB 6.44 billion, Tongzhou Base covers an area of 14.16 hectares, including 500,000 square meters for construction. The project is seen as a key construction project of the sub-center, and also an important supporting project for Tsinghua University to promote the construction of the “Double First-Class” initiative. Construction of the project will start in the second half of this year and is expected to be completed in 2025. 

Tongzhou Base will leverage PBCSF and School of Continuing Education, Tsinghua University to build a contingent of high quality faculty team, an interdisciplinary fintech study platform, a financial international academic communication platform, and a fintech platform for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.
