On June 14, 2004 Nobel Prize
winning economist Finn E. Kydland visited the Tsinghu PBCSF Global Academic
Leader Forum to give a lecture entitled “Economics, Policy, and Growth” to an
audience of over 500.
The Deputy Head of Tsinghua National Institute of Financial Research (NIFR) Hao Zhou along
with a host of distinguished professors attended the event to welcome the
Global Academic Leader Forum’s first ever Nobel Prize winning speaker.
After a brief explanation of his Nobel
Prize winning economic theory, Kydland analyzed China’s recent economic growth.
His forecast for China’s economic future is optimistic, though he pointed out
that the biggest hurdles China faces are still a low per capita GDP and a lack
of innovation. He believes that it will be important for China to continue to
open up politically and economically while focusing on innovation to increase
international competitiveness.
Finn E. Kydland is currently a professor of
economics at the University of California Santa Barbara.
