PBC School of Finance Hosts Freshman Week, 2012

The PBC School of Finance (PBCSF) arranged freshman week activities for all new 2012 students. This is the first class admitted since the establishment of the new School in March of this year. The week consisted of events such as informative lectures, dialogues with industry elites,career planningteam building workshops designed to prepare new students for studyingliving at Tsinghua.

Prof. XIE Wenhui, one of the founding professors of Tsinghua's School of EconomicsManagement,Mr. LIU Hongru, Honorary Board Chairman of PBCSF, gave lectures on the history of the universityof PBCSF respectively. In order to familiarize students with the universitynew school, each office briefed them on its functionspotential problems that students might encounter while studyingliving on campus. Additionally, the university library offered special training on how to use financial academic resources provided by the university.

Industry InsightsAcademic Views

Industry elites from CITIC Securities, Jiuding Capital, Taida International,Baidu, as well as policy makers from the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, the State Council Development Research Center,the China Banking Regulatory Commission, provided students with their valuable insights into China's economyfinancial markets. Views from an academic perspective were added by Prof. Michael. J. Sanderetto, who introduced the capital asset pricing model,Prof. LI Si who talked about the latest research trends. They also shared with students how to conduct financial researchwrite academic papers.

Career PlanningSkills Training

As the world is faced with serious unemployment issues, the finance industry is not immune to the effects of ever-increasing competition. The School values career planning at an early stage after students have been admitted. Mr. HUANG Xiaojie, school alumnusfounding partner of Jiuding Capital, gave a speech to encourage entrepreneurship in students. The same topic was also discussed in a speech given by the Executive Associate Dean, Prof. LIAO Li, who introduced the huge opportunities associated with start-ups in the industry through analyzing new business models based on the Internet. Mr. TANG Xuehe, who has worked for MicrosoftBaidu, also talked about how to plan a career by using his own experiences as an example.

As part of skills training, the School organized a New Business Model Competitionstudents competed in teams. The event was held to encourage teamworkdevelop hands-on abilities in students. The goals of the event included a focus on learning dedicationinnovation.

Comprehensive Development

The School aims to cultivate students with outstanding financial skillsto help allow them to succeed as professionals. It also aims to help them develop other qualities necessary to succeed as individuals. Dr. NIE Fenghua, Senior Associate Dean, spoke on the theme 'MissionResponsibility'. In his speech, he suggested that students should cherish integrity, broaden their experienceswork to form good personal habits.

Thanks to our industry partners, academia,alumni, freshman week ended successfully on September 7th. With great things to come, our 2012 students are about to start an amazing journey within the PBC School of Finance.
