The First Journal of Finance and Data Science Conference Successfully Held

On August 8, 2023, The first Journal of Finance and Data Science Conference 2023 (JFDS 2023), co-sponsored by Tsinghua University PBC School of Finance and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, was successfully held in Beijing. More than 40 academic talents from 25 top universities around the world, gathered to discuss the latest cutting-edge research in the field of finance and data science.

Hao Zhou, Professor of Tsinghua University PBC School of Finance, and Professor of Southern University of Science and Technology Business School delivered opening remarks. According to Zhou, the paper submissions that the conference organizing committee received exceeded expectation, and 8 papers stood out and were admitted to the Conference. JFDS is expected to be held in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and other cities, in the future, said Zhou.

Cao Huining, Professor of finance and director of the Research Institute of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, said in his speech that the integration of finance and technology has become an irresistible trend, while modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and big data bringing disruptive changes to the financial industry. Focusing on the area, the organizing committee will regularly hold theme forums on financial technology and relative frontier topics to explore the development of fintech in a more comprehensive and timely manner.

JFDS 2023 covered many cutting-edge topics in finance and data science, including machine learning and enterprise revenue forecasting, machine translation and multinational company analysis, decentralized finance and exchanges, fintech and inclusive finance, mobile payment and platform investment, and etc.

Panel discussion

The panel discussion was moderated by Bernard Yeung, Chair Professor of the Business School of Southern University of Science and Technology and joined by Zhang Xiaoyan, Professor of finance and Associate Dean of Tsinghua PBCSF, Cao Huining, Professor of finance and director of the Research Institute of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, Huang Yi, Assistant Dean of Fanhai International School of Finance, Fudan University, Huang Yiping Deputy Dean & Sinar Mas Chair Professor of Finance and Economics, National School of Development, Peking University.

The guests shared and discussed related topics on fintech and inclusive finance, digital currency trading and its impact, and policy considerations behind Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) in China and abroad.

In her speech, Zhang Xiaoyan emphasized financial technology’s impact on inclusive finance and introduced core driving forces of inclusive finance.

Su Dan, Assistant Professor of finance of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, won the Best Paper Award for his book The Macroeconomics of Techfin, voted by the committee and attendees. Song Zhongzhi, Associate Professor of the Department of Finance, Antai School of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, won the Best Discussant Award.

The speeches will be featured in the Journal of Finance and Data Science, which is expected to increase the influence of Chinese scholars in the global financial technology, especially in big data, artificial intelligence and financial applications. In the increasing trend of integration of technology and finance, JFDS is committed to providing a platform for in-depth communication and learning for academia, industry, and government institutions. It aims to take the leading role in cutting-edge academic research in finance, and contribute to the development of financial technology and the formulation of corresponding policies.
