Topic 1: Do Superstitious Investors Lose?

Abstract:

Superstition, which is defined as a belief that is not based on reason, has been a part of the human condition since humans began. But does superstition adversely affect human welfare? We answer this question in the context of trading in the Taiwan Futures Exchange, where we exploit the Chinese superstition that the number “8” is lucky and the number “4” is unlucky.

About the speaker:

Utpal Bhattacharya is an Associate Professor of Finance at Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. He received his Ph.D. in Finance from Columbia University in 1990. The focus of Professor Bhattacharya’s research is dark side of financial markets. His research has been published in several leading journals, such as Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and Management Science.
